Bringing awareness to new heights

PLATTSBURGH | In the spirit of community and celebration, area residents will soon take to the skies to raise awareness and support for mental health and the often silent struggles facing many. With a symbolic show of hope and optimism, NAMI Champlain Valley will soon join the July 10 Plattsburgh Mayor's Cup festivities with a "Let Hope Fly" kite-flying event at Plattsburgh City Beach. Organizers hope to "color the sky with hope" at 1 p.m., providing free kites to the first 150 people to join the effort. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their own kites to join the cause. "The Plattsburgh Mayor's Cup has become a staple in our community. It has been a time where families and friends are able to enjoy the festivities that summer has to bring- music, food, competition, and most importantly spirit," NAMI Champlain Valley Executive Director Amanda Bulris-Allen said. "The pandemic left many of us pushing through challenges that we never believed we were capable of pushing through. Many individuals experienced isolation, depression, fear and anxiety, and for those who already were experiencing this, those challenges were compounded. We want to lift one another up in spirit."
