Clinton County to detail gypsy moth infestation

PLATTSBURGH | With homeowners hit hard by recent infestations of gypsy moths, the Clinton County Soil and Water Conservation District will soon host a free webinar to help guide residents on what they can do to combat the caterpillars in years to come. Residents in Beekmantown, West Chazy and Point au Roche especially have been inundated by the annual population as recent aerial photos show widespread defoliation in the area and residents report being unable to enjoy the outdoors and concerned by significant forest and shrub damage. As officials field dozens of calls from concerned community members, they soon hope the caterpillar's evolving life cycles in mid-to late-June will reduce the seasonal impacts. Drier conditions and other factors have contributed to higher caterpillar populations this year and officials are encouraging the use of burlap traps and early season preventative measures to help combat the problem. DEC is not funded to help private property owners with the rising populations and said by mid-June most chemical control methods would be ineffective on the growing moths. The webinar titled Gypsy Moth Damage: What Now?- will be held June 22 at 7 p.m. DEC and New York State Forest Health experts will discuss the damage in Clinton County and what landowners can expect in the future.
