Warriors advance with heavy hitting, stingy defense

LAKE GEORGE | Relying on teamwork, efficient pitching, and meticulous fielding to win two games this week, the Lake George Warriors earned a coveted berth in the Section II Class C semifinals, set for 4 p.m. Saturday, June 12 at Whitehall High School. Lake George started out their tournament campaign by beating Holy Names Academy 6 to 1. The contest started Tuesday in the rain but was suspended after three Holy Names batters had loaded the bases by taking two walks and accomplishing one hit. Warrior pitcher Madeline Gorey, known for her accurate throws, had trouble holding onto the ball Tuesday due to the wet conditions, coach Kim Zilm said. The game was resumed Wednesday, and the Warriors prevailed with "patience at the plate," Zilm said, noting they achieved six runs over five innings. Gorey had nine strikeouts and held Holy Names to two hits. Alli Zilm tallied 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs, and both Olivia Gates and Makena Barber were 2 for 4. Slugging sensation Tyler Bergman hit a home run and executed an RBI. The next day, Lake George faced Greenwich, a formidable team, but beat them 4-0 with hot bats and exceptional defense. Gorey pitched the shutout, achieving seven strikeouts, coach Zilm said. "Madeline Gorey was on fire," she said. Tyler Bergman, who was 2 for 3, hit yet another home run in the fifth inning which scored three runs, and the other hit was a double. She was credited with 3 RBIs for the game. Madeline Gorey was 2 for 3 with two singles; Olivia Gates was 1 for 3. Coach Zilm said Gates made two outstanding plays in the bottom of the 7th to close out the game as a shutout. One was to throw out a player who tried to take an extra-base on a grounder to right field, and the other feat was a diving catch. "It was a great way to end the game," Zilm said. "Our defense is solid — All our athletes can make these types of plays. We call it our "all-in" mentality. Everyone goes 'all in' all the time." Zilm concluded that the team has a collective determination that has earned them an admirable 12-2 record overall as of June 11. "This team has the tenacity to win," she said.
