New mural to make a "Splash!" on south-side fire station

PLATTSBURGH | Outside Art: Plattsburgh Public Art Project, has announced their 14th mural. The "Splash!" mural will adorn the City of Plattsburgh Fire Department Station 2 on South Platt Street, starting in June. OA will coordinate the project that will feature and support local New York State Art Teachers Association, referred to as NYSATA, art teachers. "The NYSATA Adirondack region is eager to bring awareness to art education in the community and celebrate local heroes," Shannon Piche-Smith, NYSATA regional chair, said. Together, Piche-Smith, Lt. Michael Bonner, the firehouse members, and OA have developed a concept for the colorful, community project. OA's Co-Founder Julia Devine said, "Outside Art is excited to partner with the NYSATA teachers and the city firefighters on this project and is grateful to receive grant funding provided by the Clinton County Health Department in partnership with the New York State Health Foundation." The drawing for the mural was created by June Levenson, an art teacher at Beekmantown High School. "I wanted to create a mural that displayed the exuberance of children playing freely," Levenson said. Local art students will lend a hand and leave their marks on the mural. "The Mural is a great example of the commitment all fire departments have to the communities they serve. We look forward to seeing the hard work and talent these young artists have and are happy to provide the canvas to showcase their project," said Lt. Bonner. Plattsburgh City School District librarians Erin McGill and Michelle Gottschall will provide a literacy tie-in and will be reading the 2021 Caldecott Medal-winning book, "We are Water Protectors" by Carole Lindstrom, and illustrated by Michaela Goade, to their students. "This work of art represents the commitment we see and feel from these talented and amazing artists, the teachers who shape our future, and hard-working men and women of the Plattsburgh City Fire and EMS. I'm proud to see this work come to fruition. It tells the story of each one of these groups in a unique and lasting way," City of Plattsburgh Mayor Christopher Rosenquest said. The mural will have a message of community and will include a firefighter and a scene of children playing in the water. The theme of water encompasses the firehouse's proximity to the Saranac River, the lifesaving resource that firefighters use every day, and the feeling of joy of play that people get from engaging in recreational activities in or near water. OA's Co-Founder Amy Guglielmo said, "We see this wall as an opportunity to shine a light on the local essential workers, specifically teachers, and firefighters, and it is our goal to show the community what we can accomplish when we work together to build a dream."
