Planning underway for 2021 Mayor's Cup as nominations sought

PLATTSBURGH | With planning for the 2021 Mayor's Cup Regatta now underway, officials are seeking nominations for the event's prestigious "Spirit of Ianelli" award As the Sunrise Rotary Club Mayor's Cup Regatta and Festival Committee now works to finalize plans for the July 10 kickoff, volunteers are looking for this year's Ianelli honoree. Established in 2010 in honor of the late Mayor John Ianelli, former Mayor of the City of Plattsburgh and co-founder of the Mayor's Cup Regatta, the award is bestowed each year to someone who exemplifies the same "community does matter" spirit that inspired the former mayor more than four decades ago. "In general, Sunrise Rotary prefers to identify a single individual or individuals that exemplify community spirit and dedication," Sunrise Rotary Club President, Sue LeBlanc-Durocher, said recently. "However, in times of crisis, as in the case of the Dannemora prison break in 2015, it is difficult to put a face to all the individuals who risked their lives to protect ours. This was also true last year, in the middle of a global pandemic, when Sunrise Rotary honored all local Frontline Essential Workers." After recognizing those groups, as well as the Plattsburgh Air Park Restoration volunteers, individual honors have previously been bestowed on Janet Duprey, Gordie Little, Kit and Sally Booth, Roger Harwood and Matt Spiegel to name a few. All 2021 nominations must be received by Tuesday, June 15. Nominations should include names and contact information for both the person submitting and the nominee, as well as specific examples that illustrate the nominee's community spirit and involvement. Nominations can be emailed to joannedahlen@gmail.com. Volunteers plan to announce full details about the upcoming Mayor's Cup in the coming weeks.
