City Police investigate PCSD incident

PLATTSBURGH | A longtime City of Plattsburgh crossing guard is under investigation after widely shared videos surfaced showing a confrontation between him and a Stafford Middle School student. City of Plattsburgh Mayor Chris Rosenquest was made aware of the videos shortly after the May 4 incident unfolded outside the school during afternoon dismissal. Multiple videos were recorded by students and parents who witnessed the altercation between crossing guard Maurice Daniels and a 12-year-old student near the school crosswalk on Broad Street. Rosenquest contacted the Plattsburgh City Police Department to discuss the incident and an investigation is now underway. "The issue is under immediate investigation and the employee will not be returning to work until further notice," Rosenquest said in a subsequent social media post. Plattsburgh City School Superintendent Jay Lebrun said the district was also immediately made aware of the incident and reported it to City Police, which employs city crossing guard staff. Just one day before the incident, Daniels was publicly recognized for his years of service to the school community and was presented with a surprise $2,000 donation by the community group "Tipping North Country." In an evening update May 5, Rosenquest said the ongoing investigation-led by Juvenile Officer Charlie Wolff and Lt. Jarrod Trombley-uncovered multiple videos of the incident with 12 witnesses already having been interviewed. "We anticipate wrapping up the investigation next week," Rosenquest said.
