Young students place in regional reading competition

WARRENSBURG | More than 190 students in the Capital Region and the southern Adirondacks recently put their reading comprehension abilities to the test. The students, forming 24 teams representing nine school districts, competed in the tenth annual five-county BOCES "Battle of the Books" held March 19 and March 25. The teams from Lake George, Warrensburg, Johnsburg, and Queensbury school districts fared well in the competition. In a break with tradition, this year's event was held virtually. The local leaders in the competition were as follows: In the 3rd grade division, the team from Queensbury Elementary team placed first, the Lake George team placed second, and a Johnsburg group placed third. In the fourth grade division, Lake George placed first. In the fifth grade division, Queensbury placed first, Lake George was second and Warrensburg was third. In the sixth grade division, the Johnsburg team placed second, followed by Lake George in 3rd place, Queensbury middle school took 4th place, and a team from Warrensburg placed sixth. Each team was allowed a maximum of five students. With the direction of their coaches, the students prepared for the Battle of the Books for many months by reading five fiction and five non-fiction books selected in advance by the event organizers. Throughout the day of the competition, students are asked to recall various details about the books, ranging from the plot to the dedication. Warrensburg's fifth-grade team featured Cody Bacon, Celia O'Donnell, and Kaylie Powers, and was coached by Jennifer Casabonne and Susan Gerrain. Warrensburg's sixth-grade team was comprised of Dakota Ackley, Grace Mosher, and Ahni Nix, and was coached by Catherine Caldaroni. Casabonne, the elementary school's library media specialist, said that the competition was a way for avid readers from various schools and educational levels to connect with each other. "Battle of the Books encourages students to read books that they might not select on their own, and often end up loving," she said. They also learn to work as a team, while having fun reading and learning."
