Chiefs rebound against Vikings

PORT HENRY | Coming off a loss to rival Northeastern Clinton, the Saranac varsity girls basketball team scored a 52-25 win over Moriah March 22. Vikings coach Stephan Pelkey said the Vikings were able to keep the game close early, but Saranac's athleticism eventually won out. "We hung around with them until it was 11-7 with about two minutes left in the first quarter," he said. "They went on a 10-0 run into the second and we could never get back into the contest. Their ability to stretch out our defense on their offensive end and limiting us to one shot offensively so they could get out on break were the keys to their victory." Payton Couture scored 13 points for the Chiefs, moving into 32nd place with 1,228 points and passing ELCS alum Marissa Vernum. Vernum's daughter, Hannah Gaddor, scored six points for the Vikings in the contest. Sydney Myers added 12 points in the win for Saranac as Brenna Ducatte added nine, Allison Garman four, Raegan Mulverhill four, Lia Parker three, Aislyn Liberty three, Lexie Denis two, and Grace Reil two. Before the game, Moriah seniors Gwen Eichen (two points, eight rebounds), Kennady Allen (five points), Sage Baker (two), and Avery Briggs were celebrated before their last home game. Jayde Trow led the Vikings with eight points, with Zoe Olcott adding two.
