Racine joins mother on 1,000-point list

CHAMPLAIN | It did not take long March 22 for Abby Racine to join the Section VII 1,000-point club. Racine hit a 16-foot jumper near the foul line less than one minute into the Northeastern Clinton varsity girls basketball team's 70-36 win over AuSable Valley, giving her the final two points she needed to become the 71st member of the elite Section VII list. In all, Racine scored 27 points in the game, putting her at 1,025 in her career, and joining NCCS alumni Courtney Coryea (1,909), Sarah Bushey (1,453), Katrina Garrand (1,264), Rachel Coryea (1,215), former teammate Kya McComb (1,191), Miranda Perras (1,161), Kayla Carder (1,069) and Jennifer Johnson (1,054). However, there was one other NCCS alum whose number she was even more focused on — the 1,167 points scored by Nicole Lafountian Racine — or, as Abby calls her, Mom. "I wanted to reach this since I came onto the varsity team as an eighth-grader, so this is huge to me," said Racine. "Being able to play during this pandemic and get my name on the same list as my mom so we could be a duo is one of the biggest things I wanted to achieve this season. "I can't explain how much it means to me to join the 1,000-point list with her," she added. "I look up to my mother as a basketball player and now that I am going to be alongside here in (the NCCS trophy) case it means the world to me." "It's her dreams come true," said Nicole Racine. "It has been such a ride for us and I feel very grateful that I had a daughter that shared my passion and we got to share that with her as a family. Getting here helps us celebrate how hard she has worked, pushed herself along the years, and pushed us to allow her to play more, have more opportunities, and work harder." The Racine's join the duo of Jody Bigelow Olcott ('94 Crown Point, 1,169) and Madison Olcott ('19 Moriah, 1,291) as mother-daughter combos on the Section VII scoring list. A chance to score 1,000 The younger Racine said she was grateful to have the chance to play basketball in her senior season. "The pandemic was a concern, but I was grateful to hear we could play," she said. "I didn't know for the longest time how far away I was, and my parents made me aware two or three games ago I was getting close, and coach (Robb Garrand) said he would do everything he could to make sure I could get there." "We were hoping coming out of last year this would be the year, then the pandemic hit and now, we are just completely grateful we were able to get here," said Mom Racine. Nicole said watching Abby's milestone performance reminded her of her game against Seton Catholic in 1995-96 season when she connected on a free throw against Seton Catholic to reach the milestone. "I remember all of the family and friends there," said Nicole. "I wish she could have had more of that, but we did our best. I think it means something different for her because of this experience and she knows that." Currently, the daughter is 142 points behind her mother, and Abby would have to average 71 points-per-game in her final two varsity outings to reach Nicole, something the younger Racine believes will be a topic of conversation sooner rather than later. "I guarantee that conversation is going to always happen down the road — it will probably start tonight with her telling me I can't get to her total," said Abby. Mom's response: "I can't really let it go."
