Patriots top Bobcats in thriller

ELLENURG DEPOT | The AuSable Valley varsity boys basketball team scored their second consecutive win over Northern Adirondack March 19, this time in a much more thrilling fashion. After a one-sided victory the day before, the Patriots and Bobcats went down to the wire on NAC's senior night, with AVCS eventually scoring a 61-58 win. "It was the best high school basketball Jamie Douglas and myself have been a part of, and this year in Clintonville we had already been in very memorable games in their own regard," said Bobcat coach Nate Bilow. Aidan Lopez led the Patriots with 19 points, hitting key free throws late in the contest to seal the win. "Lopez hit four free throws in the fourth quarter and went 7-of-7 at the line on the game," said Bilow. "There was a phenomenal inbounds pass and catch by AuSable that easily could've been a turnover but resulted in us sending Aidan back to the line. Hats off to that play." Eli Douglas and Nate Doner each scored 10 points for the Patriots, while Korvin Dixon added nine, Spencer Daby six, Carson Garcia five and Austin Mattilla two. Silas Lewis led the Bobcats with 14 points, while newly-minted 1,000-point club member Cody Lambert added 13, Matt Boulrice 11 and Tommy Bergeron 10. "Ausable Valley built a double-digit lead in the second quarter, but by the final buzzer of the half we found themselves in a tie ball game thanks to 11 points in the quarter from Cody Lambert and a three-point basket at the buzzer by Tommy Bergeron," said Bilow. "We had built the thing up well in the first part of the third quarter, but we turned the ball over seven times in the last four minutes and we let them breathe a little." Hunter Trombley and Brady Magoon each added five points. Before the game, NAC honored seniors Rylee Pivetta and Anika Knight of the cheerleading team along with Bergeron, Lewis, Lambert and Magoon.
