Arrest made in 2020 prison mailroom scare that sickened officers

DANNEMORA | A former inmate at Clinton Correctional Facility is now facing a felony charge following a lengthy investigation into packaged contraband that sickened nearly a dozen officers. On Jan. 31, 2020, officers were inspecting a package that was mailed to a maximum-security inmate when they discovered a powdered substance that ultimately made 11 officers and staff members ill, requiring treatment at the University of Vermont Health Network-CVPH hospital. The scare inside the Annex mailroom brought numerous first responders to the area, including members of the New York State Police Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team. Early reports from the governor's office identified the substance as fentanyl, though later testing determined the substance was synthetic cannabinoids. Following a more than year-long investigation by State Police, the Office of Special Investigations with New York State Department of Correction and Community Supervision, Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Clinton County District Attorney's Office, authorities made an arrest in the case March 4. Alex Krahmalni, 44, was arrested and charged with one count of felony promoting prison contraband in connection with the case. Officials said Krahmalni was previously an inmate at the Dannemora facility and had been released in November 2019. Krahmalni was virtually arraigned in Plattsburgh City Court and released under a pre-trial release program, officials told Sun Community News March 9. He will reappear in Dannemora Village Court March 15 to face the allegations.
