Wilmington planning board refers Dollar General project to attorneys

WILMINGTON | With nearly 150 people looking on — more than 10% of the town's entire population — the Wilmington Planning and Zoning tabled a request on March 1 to locate a Dollar General store on the eastern fringe of the hamlet. The board will revisit the request in a month, after its attorneys have had time to evaluate the request. Although unscientific, feedback on social media has run strongly against the project in a town that prides itself on its lack of national chain stores. Residents say a dollar store cheapens the Wilmington image as a trendy skiing and mountain-biking town. There is also fear that it would be detrimental to locally owned businesses, most notably the beloved Little Supermarket. The dollar store would basically be next door to the market, across Rt. 86 from the state police barracks. Not all commentary has been negative; some say the bottom-basement prices of dollar-story dry goods would be a benefit to people who are struggling to make ends meet. A Dollar General representative said the dry goods story would be low-impact, placing few demands on local utilities. The property currently has a house that would be taken down, and in its place would be a 10,600 square-foot single-story store. The location would require a change from residential to commercial zoning. Residents will have a chance to comment on the plan at a future meeting.
