Opinion: Hope lays in the results of vaccine's effectiveness

Relief, a feeling of reassurance following a release of anxiety or distress. The act of reducing something unpleasant. Some of us have had the opportunity to feel that recently thanks to a little vial of hope made by Pfizer and Moderna. This month's column is for those who are patiently awaiting their turn for vaccination or for those who are unsure what the vaccine might provide and have yet to make a decision. When recently qualified for the vaccination I did not hesitate to take the chance to become vaccinated because for me, the fear of not having the vaccine and getting COVID, and likely transferring COVID to those that I work with, or the ones that I love, far outweighed any potential risks. What helped me decide? The vaccines do not use the live virus, they use messenger RNA. Messenger RNA (temporary messengers) basically sends instructions to our cells to make a harmless spike protein that is found on the surface of the virus that causes COVID-19. After the message is delivered, it disappears (the RNA doesn't stay in our body). Our bodies will recognize that the protein spike is doesn't belong there, in response will begin building an immune response and making antibodies. What are some facts to consider? -The production of the vaccine followed the usual steps for testing and review. The vaccine received independent review and approval for emergency use. -The vaccine does not alter your DNA. -One cannot get COVID-19 from the vaccination. -COVID 19 vaccines can cause flu like symptoms. This is our body responding to the to the spike protein. It means our bodies are doing what it is supposed to be doing. Other reactions are extremely rare. -People who have health conditions that affect their immune system or who have gotten treatments that reduce their immune response, should talk to their doctor about vaccination. -People who have already had COVID-19 and recovered, can still get the vaccine. Experts do not know how long someone is protected from getting sick again after having had COVID-19. -Getting vaccinated may also protect people around us, particularly people at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19. Although the vaccine isn't a cure, the vaccine has given me a little more relief as I continue to provide supports in our community. It has allowed me to come how after a long day at work and feel a little less worried that I might be transmitting it to my 10-year-old girls. It gives me hope that in the near future some of the activities I once participated in might be an option. Hope lays in the results of the vaccine's effectiveness with 94-95% efficacy. Combine being vaccinated, with some masking and continued social distancing and we have a future where we can gain back some normalcy.
