Dannemora community rallies to help those in need

DANNEMORA | What started as a small raffle quickly evolved into an outpouring of community support that raised hundreds of dollars in donations and a truckload of supplies for those in need. Typically, each December, Brush Against Time Salon in Dannemora hosts a festive gathering for residents of all ages, but the current pandemic put a halt to their 2020 celebration. Despite the challenging times, salon staff still wanted to give back to the community and decided to raffle off a basket of goodies, including gift certificates, products and a mini photoshoot with J DuBrey Venne Photography. And what started as a small impromptu fundraiser quickly united the community and rallied area residents to help their neighbors in need. "I'm just in awe with how much has been given during the most difficult times," salon owner, Shauna Grube, said in mid-February as she and co-worker Linda Tousignant delivered heaping boxes of donations to the Dannemora JCEO. "We are very thankful for everyone who has supported us through everything. We will always try to give back and be here for those who are here for us. Because without them, we wouldn't be here." Before COVID, the salon was often packed with clients, family, and friends and Grube said the fundraiser was just one way they could bring everyone together once again. "This salon is always full of love, laughter, family, and friends and right now it's very hard that we can't be together, but we can still come together in a time of need," she said. For Grube, the effort not only helped fill shelves at the local food pantry but also showed how the North Country spirit continues to shine despite the times. "Even though we can't be together, we can still come together for our community. And this was a nice way for everyone to pull together."
