Addison Co. Sheriff's Dept. looking to fund $1.5 million budget

MIDDLEBURY | In 2021, the Addison County Sheriff's Department won't be looking for an increase in local taxes to fund its budget. Instead, the department is looking to individuals in the wider community for assistance in meeting its mission. The department is looking for help to fund its $1.5 million annual budget. Sheriff Peter Newton recently sent a mass-mailed palm card to Addison County residents outlining its Safe Roads, Safe Communities program. "Traditionally, towns have contracted with us for law enforcement services focusing on traffic enforcement on an hourly basis limiting us t certain hours and days," according to the sheriff's mailing. "As events have shown us in the past year, a new approach to law enforcement is needed. We take pride in our relationship with the community we serve and are striving to find ways to better serve the people of Addison County." Normally, the sheriff has been funded through its various town and other agency contracts. But the department now believes the traditional funding mechanisms are "limiting factors" and seeks a new way. "If every household in the county contributed $110, the budget would be met," according to the sheriff's office. The Addison County Sheriff Department currently has 17 full and part-time deputies; the agency serves the following county towns: Addison, Bridport, Bristol, Cornwall, Ferrisburg, Goshen, Granville, Hancock, Leicester, Lincoln, Middlebury, Monkton, New Haven, Orwell, Panton, Ripton, Salisbury, Shoreham, Starksboro, Waltham, Weybridge, and Whiting. The Addison County Sheriff Department dates to the late 1700s and has been at its current location since 1845. The sheriff's jail operated from 1845 until 1971, reopened in the mid-1980s, and closed again in 2011. The Addison County Sheriff Department includes the Addison County Unit for Special Investigation.
