Deputy seriously injured after Northway accident

BEEKMANTOWN | A Clinton County Sheriff's deputy was hospitalized for several days following an early morning crash on the Northway Jan. 23. New York State Police said the accident happened near Exit 40 in the northbound lanes of I-87 at about 2:50 a.m. when Deputy Tanner A. Hooker was responding to an emergency call. State Police said the deputy was driving a 2009 Chevy Tahoe with his emergency lights on as he responded to a 911 call when he attempted to make a left turn into a "U-turn from the right lane when he turned into the path of a 2016 Ford F150 operated by 22-year-old Keegan R. Kwetcian of Morrisonville, who was traveling north in the left lane." Kwetcian's truck hit the patrol SUV on its driver's side, sending it off the shoulder of the highway and into a nearby DOT sign. The accident brought an immediate response by the Clinton County Sheriff's Department, State Police, West Chazy Fire Department, Beekmantown Fire Department, and UVM CVPH EMS and both drivers were soon transported to the University of Vermont Health Network at the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh. Authorities said the crash left the local deputy with several serious internal injuries and Kwetcian with a head injury. The deputy was hospitalized in stable condition for several days before being released from the hospital late Jan. 25. Kwetcian was treated and released. The accident remains under investigation by State Police. The Clinton County Sheriff's Department issued a press release Jan. 24 regarding the accident and said Hooker was responding to a 911 call in progress regarding a barricaded domestic violence suspect when the accident happened. No further details were immediately available. -An earlier version of this article indicated the deputy was released from the hospital following the accident. CVPH clarified Jan. 26 that Hooker was hospitalized in stable condition until late Jan. 25. Kwetcian was treated and released.
