N.Y. senators talk new president and new role

WASHINGTON, D.C. | Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D) and Chuck Schumer (D) welcomed new President Joseph Biden in statements made following the Jan. 20 inauguration ceremony, while Schumer also started his new term as the Senate Majority Leader. "Today's inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris was a demonstration of the American people's resolve and optimism," said Gillibrand. "While our nation continues to face unprecedented public health and economic crisis, the inauguration was a moment of hope, and the start of a journey to not only recover from the pandemic but to rebuild and strengthen our nation. President Biden will be a president for all Americans and I'm ready to work with him to lay the foundation for a brighter future." Gillibrand also spoke to the historic nature of the swearing-in of Harris. "To see my friend Kamala Harris, a daughter of immigrants, be sworn in as our nation's first woman vice president and first black and South Asian vice president, was a truly historic and unforgettable moment," she said. In his statement, Schumer was focused on policy. "From reversing the heinous Muslim Ban and inhumane family separation policy to re-entering the Paris Climate Agreement, mitigating the spread of COVID-19 and accelerating vaccine distribution, the executive orders announced today by the Biden-Harris administration are just the beginning," said Schumer. Schumer also remarked on his new role as U.S. Senate Majority Leader. "As the son of an exterminator and a homemaker and a descendant of Holocaust victims, I'm thinking about my family and how remarkable it is that a kid from Brooklyn could grow up to lead the U.S. Senate," Schumer said via Twitter. "I intend to honor that trust placed in me with all of my energy and with joy."
