Drive-thru vaccination site to open in Clinton Co. as soon as next week

PLATTSBURGH | Local health officials are now finalizing plans with the New York State Department of Health to open a drive-thru vaccination facility for currently eligible residents. In an effort to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine as quickly as possible, officials are furthering plans to host the new drive-thru option, though they clarified it will be run by the New York State Department of Health and only open to those who are currently qualified to receive the vaccine in Phase 1A and 1B. Officials hope to administer at least 1,000 doses there each day, officials announced Jan. 13. All vaccinations will be available by appointment only. Registration links and phone numbers will be provided when they become available. As the state's local distribution just begins, residents are asked to be patient with the process and advised there is not currently a list available to signup for the drive-thru option. More information will be released as it is finalized. "We are told this site could be up and running as early as next week," John Kanoza, director of Public Health in Clinton County, said Jan. 13 as Clinton County recorded its 12th COVID-19 related death and 59 new cases overnight. "We have been assured by NYSDOH this site will not affect the allocation of vaccines to other providers within the county." Those providers currently include Hudson Headwaters, CVPH, Clinton County Health Department and several pharmacies. Currently, eligibility and distribution of the vaccine is done at the directive of NYSDOH, Kanoza reminded. "For example, pharmacies are only permitted to vaccinate people 65 and older. CCHD had been directed to distribute its allotment of vaccine to specifically designated sub groups within Phases 1A and 1B," Kanoza said. "The addition of a NYSDOH site is great news for our residents who have been deemed eligible, but do not fall into one of those sub groups." CCHD will continue to update the public through media, social media, and their website, www.clintonhealth.org.
