Peru restaurants combat area COVID-19 spike

PERU | Like many across the region, two local restaurants in Peru are adapting to the late December spike of COVID-19 cases as one temporarily shuts its doors and the other moves to take-out only service. Pasquale's Restaurant and Bar shut its doors voluntarily Dec. 26 after a staff member tested positive and other employees were quarantined. "For the safety of our customers and staff, and to make sure we have great customer service when we open, we will remain closed until further notice," owners told customers as the region braced for now record-levels of COVID-19 cases. "We were not asked to close and are cleared by the Clinton County Department of Health to open, but we want to make sure our employees and customers are safe. Taking the extra time to make sure our employees are healthy is more important to us than anything else." On Dec. 29, Pasquale's extended its temporary closure as they eyed a tentative Jan. 8 reopening date. "At this time, most of our staff is under quarantine due to close contact tracing and we need time to make sure we are all safe. Staying closed, stopping the spread and making sure we are virus-free is the only way to safely move forward for our customers and staff," owners told customers as they thanked them for their continued support. At nearby Livingood's Restaurant and Brewery, owners also changed their operations Dec. 26, moving to take-out only service to help curb possible community spread. "" With the rise of COVID numbers in our area and to keep our staff, customers and community safe, we have made the decision to not provide indoor dining. Nobody has tested positive here at Livingood's and we would like to keep it that way," owners said. Bringing on added staff, the restaurant has stayed busy with increased takeout orders as they also made a proactive move to deep clean and sanitize the much-loved restaurant on Bear Swamp Road. While the community gave overwhelming support for the temporary move, owners were taking it day-by-day to determine when it might resume full services. On Dec. 29, Clinton County recorded the largest one-day spread with 47 new cases announced overnight and 150 new active cases tallied over a 5-day span. Several other businesses across the region have adapted their services to the continued spike as others, such as Butcher Block in Plattsburgh, worked to assure guests of their COVID-free status and heightened safety measures. Fourth Ward in Plattsburgh also recently temporarily closed its doors in a proactive effort to protect customers after a COVID-19 exposure there.
