Police shooting case moved to County Court

SCHUYLER FALLS | New York State Police have released new details in the case against Kevin Doherty Jr. for a Dec. 6 shooting involving law enforcement. Authorities said Doherty, 34, was scheduled to appear in Town of Schuyler Falls Court Dec. 17 when his legal counsel waived a felony hearing and the case was moved to Clinton County Court for presentation to a grand jury. In a Dec. 23 update on the case, New York State Police said the top charges against Doherty - two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer - stem from Doherty firing at responding troopers and a Clinton County Sheriff's deputy. Police said sheriff's deputies were the first to respond to Doherty's Rabideau Street residence and "engaged Doherty Jr. in dialogue before troopers arrived. "The defendant subsequently fired a shotgun at law enforcement from an open window," the update stated. Doherty was seriously injured when police returned fire and was arrested on a series of charges upon his release from Albany Medical Center about a week later. The most significant charges of attempted murder stem from his alleged firing of the weapon at Sheriff's Deputy Tyler Condlin and Trooper Shannon Saunders, who were not injured. He is also accused of menacing the responding officers and for criminal possession of a weapon during the standoff at his Schuyler Falls residence. Doherty was also charged with criminal contempt, burglary, criminal obstruction of breathing and endangering the welfare of a child in connection with an alleged domestic incident that happened just a short time before the shooting. He remains in custody without bail as the case progresses.
