Young students stay in class thanks to city police and firefighters

PLATTSBURGH | When Plattsburgh City Police Officer Logan Barrett first heard about several local students in need she was moved into action and on a mission to help. In early December, Barrett learned of a handful of students in the North Country Kids program who were unable to attend classes because they didn't have access to tablets. The early intervention education program had some tablets to loan to students, but not enough for each child, leaving six unable to fully participate. Hoping to help students stay enrolled in classes, Barrett went to the Plattsburgh Police Local 812 union for help. She was soon able to get union donations for three of the highly sought tablets and reached out to city firefighters to see if they could match the contribution. "After hearing the story and what these children stood to lose, there was no way we could say no," representatives with the Plattsburgh Professional Firefighters Local 2421 said. "So together our police and firefighters were able to donate six tablets needed for North Country kids." In a heartfelt donation just days before the holidays, city police officers and firefighters surprised the local program and its students with the tablets, making sure each child could stay in the program and finish the year. "Having access to this technology is important to allow children access to a variety of different services that are offered," officials with the Firefighters Local 2421 said following a visit to the New York Road program. The donation of tablets is just one of many community causes the public-safety agencies have stepped up to help this holiday season as both city departments donated hundreds of toys to the Clinton County Christmas Bureau and stockpiles of supplies to area food shelves, among other causes.
