Remodeled Shamrock Inn offers sleek comfort, adventure

PERU | Located at 2445 on New York State Route 9 in Peru, the Shamrock Inn at the Adirondacks, just along the Ausable River, came under new ownership in March 2020. Ann-Marie Kelly and her daughter, Jennifer, closed on the property at the very start of the pandemic, but they had planned their investment back in November when Kelly and her children spent Thanksgiving together in Manhattan. That's when she said, "Okay, I'm going to do this." Since then, the site's 10 units have undergone extensive renovations, including modernized kitchenettes, air conditioning, bathrooms, flooring, and freshly painted rooms. Other improvements included updated water lines, electric and replaced septic capabilities. And plans are underway to renovate the four cabins on-site of the surrounding 13 acres of land. She hopes to update them in the early spring of 2021. "It's been an adventure," Kelly said, who spoke glowingly about the area and its welcoming communities. "For someone new to the area, I've met so many amazing people." The location was formerly owned for 31 years by a woman who kept it "quaint, cute and neat as a pin," according to Kelly, who exchanged the previous 60's and 70's decor for sleek, muted tones -- in her words, "clean lines" and "simplicity." The five rooms with kitchenettes include dishes and pots and pans. She said the goal was to have everything visitors might need for their stay without cluttering the rooms. Since opening on June 1, the spot has been popular among area adventurers keen on summer activities like fishing and boating, with kayak rentals from Adirondack River Rentals and hiking and biking trails at nearby Ausable Point State Park. And Ausable Chasm is less than two miles away and Whiteface is around 40. A fire pit, corn hole and horseshoes are on-site and available for use. In 2021, Kelly has plans to add badminton to the list. As for winter activities, she said cross country skiing and snowshoeing are also popular area activities visitors engage in. Kelly called the inn and the surrounding area a "hidden gem" for adventurers, especially amidst the pandemic. "People were finding local things to do -- I definitely benefited from that," she said.
