"Ca$h For Paws" raises $7,361 for Homeward Bound, Addison Co. Humane Society

MIDDLEBURY | For the fifth consecutive time, WVTK-FM radio host Bruce Zeman, accomplished what he set out to achieve - raising money to help local animals. This year, with help from his new sidekicks, Zoey and Calvin, Zeman again raised an impressive amount of money to help save shelter animals in Addison County. Created by Zeman back in 2009, "Bruce & Hobbes' Ca$h for Paws" is an annual radiothon, held on 92.1 WVTK in Middlebury, Vermont, to generate money for Homeward Bound, Addison County's Humane Society. With the passing of Hobbes, his long-time radio partner in July, an emotional Zeman dedicated the radiothon to his best four-legged friend. "This year's radiothon I did for Hobbes, so more animals like him would get that second chance," Zeman told The Eagle. As for the event, as in year's past, for a $10 donation, Zeman & his pups offered to play ANY song requested by a listener. This year marked the fifth annual radiothon which ran from 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 12, to 11:59 p.m., on the same date. Zeman went live for 24 consecutive hours. "The goal was $6,000 and listeners came through," according to Zeman. Over 90 people donated, including former Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas, (who donated $100), to reach the mark. During the event, Zeman did multiple interviews, sang, and poked fun at himself, all with the goal of helping animals which he accomplished, raising the $7,361 in 24 hours, with donations still coming in. Zoey and Calvin, for their part, ate cookies and pancakes, while doing their best to look good on Local 22/Local 44 television, which generously provided TV coverage of the radiothon. With the "2020 Ca$H for Paws Radiothon" in the local record books, including this year's total, Bruce and Hobbes have raised over $65,000 for Homeward Bound with the event. Zeman, and his canine sidekick Hobbes, hosted the award-winning "The Wake-Up Crew with Bruce & Hobbes" on 92.1 WVTK-FM, in Middlebury, Vermont. Their top-rated show was the only morning radio program in the United States, featuring a human and canine. Zeman (an author, motivational speaker, & animal rights activist) and Hobbes (a rescued dachshund, who is a domestic violence survivor) traveled the country speaking in schools about anti-bullying efforts, compassion, tolerance, and empathy for people and animals. The book, titled "Hobbes Goes Home", has been read in over 285 schools in eight states and includes a forward written by former U.S. President Barack H. Obama. With Hobbes passing in July, at the age of 14, his sister Zoey, and brother, Calvin, have stepped up to help their "dad" continue the show, and their work helping people and animals.
