Contractor arrested for alleged building scams in Jay and Altona

PLATTSBURGH | A local contractor has been arrested accused of scheming thousands of dollars from area residents for incomplete construction projects. New York State Police are continuing to investigate the claims against Michael A. Lafrance and are asking anyone with similar experiences to come forward. Authorities launched the investigation following a late January complaint filed by an Ellenburg Depot resident, who reportedly paid Lafrance upfront for roofing work that was never completed. Despite a signed contract, police said, Lafrance failed to finish the reshingling work, leaving the roof open to the elements and causing damage to the interior of the home. While investigating the report, authorities soon reportedly identified three other homeowners with similar claims in Jay and Altona. In those instances, Lafrance, who operated under the name Cornerstone Contracting, allegedly received money upfront for roofing repairs and then failed to complete the jobs. A warrant for Lafrance's arrest was recently issued by Clinton County Court, lodging three counts of felony third-degree grand larceny and one count of scheme to defraud against him. Lafrance, 38, of Altona was arrested on the charges Nov. 1 and remanded to Clinton County Jail pending further court action.
