Rutland County youth receives Flyin' Ryan scholarship

SOUTH BURLINGTON | Vermont-based Flyin' Ryan Adventure Scholarship Program officials announced the addition of three new sport-adventure scholarship recipients. Rocco Jones Rocco Jones is 12 years old who lives in Wallingford, Vermont, and attends Mill River Union High School. He is the youngest and the smallest caddie at the Ekwanok in Manchester. He likes snowboarding, skiing, mountain biking, wrestling, soccer, rock climbing, and running 5Ks and Spartan races. In 2019 Jones won the Kids' Two-Mile Competitive Spartan Race as well as the Killington Triathlon in the midst of a snowstorm. He won the Woodward Fastest Ninja Challenge in his age group both for Killington Mountain and across the country. After suffering a few snowboarding accidents he has become a strong advocate of wearing a helmet and will be using his award to advance his education in competitive snowboarding and safety by attending the Killington Mountain School Boost Snowboard program. His dream is to become a competitive snowboarder and compete in the X Games. Maisie Wagner and Ellie Huff Maisie Wagner and Ellie Huff are both 17-year-old Big Mountain skiers who reside in Colorado. They compete through IFSA and are part of an IFSA-sponsored group, called the Rippin' Ladies, which seeks to support and encourage young women to join mountain skiing. Flyin' Ryan Adventure Scholarship applicants come up with their own set of core values and demonstrate character, passion for their goal, and financial need. To date, the program has given out over 120 awards. The Flyin Ryan Hawks Foundation was formed in 2011 to extend the impact of the life of Ryan Hawks who, at the age of 25, tragically died while competing on the free-ride world ski tour. Before he died, Hawks composed "14 Principles for Living". Over the last three years, the Foundation has developed a five-step program called Flyin' Ryan Decisions. The program was pioneered at South Burlington High School. The foundation is currently introducing this same program to other schools around the state.
