FBI investigating confirmed cyber attack on UVM network's system

BURLINGTON, Vt. | University of Vermont Medical Center officials said the Federal Bureau of Investigation has joined the probe into a confirmed cyberattack on the health network's internal computer systems. The cyberattack affected operations across the University of Vermont Health Network Oct. 29, including at its affiliates in New York, such as Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital and Elizabethtown Community Hospital. Both northern New York facilities reportedly maintained patient-care services, though some of CVPH's physician-practice patients experienced delays and rescheduled appointments. Officials said the attack "cause variable impacts at each of our affiliates", including issues with the internal patient portal system. Staff members are reportedly practicing standby procedures to ensure patient care. In a 3:30 p.m. update, UVM officials said they "expect that it will take some time to restore and we are working as quickly as possible to return to normal operations." "We understand the difficulty this causes for our patients and the community and apologize for the impact," officials said in a statement as media inquiries about the investigation were directed to the FBI. The Vermont Department of Public Safety is also actively involved in the ongoing investigation. Affected patients will be contacted with further direction. Hospital officials plan to provide system and patient-service updates when they are available.
