Wbg. town employee dies in gun accident

DIAMOND POINT | Charles "Chip" Webster, manager of the town of Warrensburg's wastewater treatment plant, died last week due to a gunfire wound at his hunting camp — and townspeople have since been mourning his passing. Authorities said the incident occurred at about 4:45 p.m. on Oct . 17 at Webster's camp on Horse Hill Road in Edinburg as he removed his rifle from the back of his vehicle and the gun fired accidentally. Webster, 48, of East Schroon River Road was a lifelong area resident and he attended Warrensburg Central School. In 2015, he undertook training at Morrisville State College and earned certification in Municipal Water System Management. His death was a shock, saddening many in the Warrensburg community, town supervisor Kevin Geraghty said, noting that the town relied on his vast knowledge as he operated the sewer plant. "Chip was dedicated and enthusiastic about his work. He would take on anything we asked him to do," Geraghty said, noting he would help out on municipal construction projects. "This is a great loss to our town government and our community." Webster was known for his good humor and his willingness to help others. In Dec. 2018, Webster was one of a half-dozen town workers who received hearty applause, at a town meeting, for investing countless hours stringing up holiday lights around town. According to family members and friends, he was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, camping, and boating. In his spare time, he enjoyed radio-controlled aircraft, cars, and drones. Friends and family members attended calling hours on Oct. 23 at Alexander Funeral Home, where a service celebrating Webster's life was held immediately afterward. The funeral was officiated by Rev. Stephen Andrews, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Warrensburg. As of Oct. 25, Webster's "tribute wall" at the above website included such comments as "Chip was a wonderful person and a very kind soul — He will be missed by all who knew him." Also posted was: "He was one of a kind and a good friend," adding that many great memories of Webster will live on among area residents. Charles Webster is survived by his mother Janine Webster-Baird of Warrensburg; his wife of 20 years Stacey Webster; his daughters Samantha Rathbun and Moriah Frasier; his 10 grandchildren; his sister Renee Coon, his stepmother Cathy Webster and his step-siblings Missy and Ethan Vernum — as well as many other relatives and friends.
