Juvenile driver causes accident

CORNWALL | On Oct. 17, at approximately 5:18 a.m., troopers with the Vermont State Police were dispatched to a reported two-car head-on collision on Route 30 in the town of Cornwall. A preliminary investigation indicates a juvenile was traveling south on Route 30 at an unknown speed. The juvenile driver traveled left of center into the opposing lane of travel. At approximately the same time, Patrick Burke, 21, of Fair Haven, was traveling north at a speed believed to be approximately 50 mph. Burke recognized the hazard of an approaching vehicle and attempted to avoid a collision, but was unable to do so. The vehicle driven by Burke came to rest just off the southbound shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle driven by the juvenile came to rest east of the roadway. Driver fatigue appears to be a contributing factor in this motor vehicle crash. Both operators were transported to the University of Vermont Porter Medical Center. Route 30 was closed for several hours as a result of this motor vehicle crash. The Vermont State Police were assisted on scene by members of the Cornwall Fire Department and Middlebury Rescue.
