Cadyville Beach bathhouse becomes the first town art project

CADYVILLE | There's a new bright spot along the Saranac River thanks to the Town of Plattsburgh, a new outdoor art project and a Brooklyn artist with local ties. Tess Jones-White recently spent about a week transforming the Cadyville Beach bathhouse into a tranquil painted river scene welcoming residents to the cherished decades-old waterfront. A giant painted postcard on the front of the bathhouse now greets beach-goers with hues of fluorescent orange to become the first piece in the town's new outdoor art project. The effort evolved after town officials admired the growing Outdoor Art movement in downtown City of Plattsburgh and wanted to bring similar eye-catching work to the parks and playgrounds uptown. "This started with me seeing all the great work Amy Guglielmo is doing with the city's outdoor art project, and I wanted to bring the art uptown," Town Councilor Meg LeFevre explained. "She connected me with a couple of local artists and here we are. I hope we can continue doing this and expand out, but we figured we'd start with the bathhouse." After roughly 20 hours of work in early October, despite cooling temperatures and days of high winds, Jones-White recently completed the beach mural to the cheers of passing motorists and elation of curious onlookers. "There's been so much positive feedback, people have been stopping to see it and honking as they go by," Jones-White said Oct. 9 as she put the final touches on the massive mural. "It's been a lot of work, but it's so exciting too." Jones-White was one of the more than three dozen local artists who worked with Guglielmo and other volunteers with the Outside Art: Plattsburgh Public Art Project on a recently completed Migrations mural downtown near City Hall Place and applauded the new growing collaboration of local artists and the town. "I just love the idea of so many artists getting involved," the Plattsburgh native said. "And it's great the town might start doing more of this too." LeFevre also hopes the town's outdoor art movement will continue to grow and applauded local Kiwanis for donating funds and supplies for the project. "It gives local artists an opportunity to use their talents in such a positive way, and I'd love to work with local high schools to see if the art teachers and students want to get involved too." She said organizers selected the beach house for the first mural as dozens of area residents use the nearby kayak launch and picnic greens each year. "It's such a sweet spot and tons of people use our beach each year. It's a small way to bring a big impact to alot of people and it's a very visible spot on Route 3. "We need to have these little bright spots in our community and this is certainly one."
