Saranac man jailed and fined following 2019 moose killing

SARANAC | A local man has been sentenced to 60 days in jail and stiff fines after he shot and killed a moose in 2019. Zachary Vaughan, 26, has been facing a number of charges in connection with the illegal killing and was recently sentenced in Franklin Town Court to jail time and $5,525 in fines. He also had his hunting privileges revoked for five years. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation launched an investigation into the October 2019 killing after a camp member in the Chateaugay Highlands Easement reported finding a dead cow moose on the property. A crime-scene investigation, aided by the help of a DEC K-9, led investigators to a number of clues and subsequent anonymous tips ultimately led them to Vaughan. Though he initially denied the claims, DEC law-enforcement officers later obtained a search warrant for the home of Vaughan and his parents, which led to a voluntary statement from the suspect, DEC officials said Sept. 25. He was later charged with four misdemeanors: the taking of a moose; possessing a loaded firearm in a vehicle; use of artificial light in a vehicle while in possession of a firearm and hunting deer with the aid of artificial light. Vaughan was also charged with three additional conservation-law violations for killing the moose, which are protected in New York State
