Seven new COVID-19 cases from Essex Center

ELIZABETHTOWN | Essex County Public Health reported seven new cases of COVID-19 connected to the Essex Center outbreak, according to the Sept. 3 report. Of the seven, six are lab-confirmed and one is a suspected case and that person is hospitalized. Four people are now in hospital with COVID-19 from the outbreak. An elder at the Essex Center nursing home died Sept. 1, according to Public Health. A total of seven people have died since the outbreak began on Aug. 17, six in Essex County, and one who had returned home to Clinton County. Public Health Director of Health Planning Jessica Darney Buehler said there is a push from all laboratories working with tests from here to get results back as soon as possible. She did not know the status of the federal rapid testing initiative announced earlier this week, or if it has been deployed at the nursing home. According to Public Health data as of Sept. 3, COVID-19 has reached 95 people in the Essex Center outbreak since Aug. 17, due to spreading inside and from nursing home staff; 52 of the people affected are, or were, residents of the nursing home. A total of 31 staff have tested positive along with 11 close contacts of staff, and 27 staff have recovered. Public Health Department personnel have not initiated further mass screening events in Essex County.
