Peru Applefest cancelled

PERU | St. Augustine's Church in Peru has made the decision to cancel their biggest fundraiser of the year. The annual St. Augustine's Applefest, scheduled for Sept. 19-20 this year, has been cancelled after the festival committee recommended to not go forward with the event. "It is the first time in the history of the annual Fest that it has been canceled," said Father Dennis Duprey of St. Augustine's. "Its celebrated history has honored the beauty of the area, its hard workers, and the fruit of the tree that has helped define the Peru community." Duprey said the logistics of trying to plan the event without having a true handle on where county or state regulations would be due to the COVID-19 pandemic made it hard to hold the event. "We have been having discussions on the matter since June and had a pretty good feeling we would be canceling in July," said Duprey. "We wanted to see if there was going to be any changes that would let us say we can go ahead, but it takes an awful lot to prepare for the events and a meal when we do not know what the parameters were going to be." Duprey said events like a dinner, which is usually served buffet style, would have to be changed in order to meet with county and state guidelines. "Serving food is a more complicated thing because they all have to sit at their table and they have to be served the food, and our dinners here are more like buffets," he said. Raffle still on Duprey said the church will still be doing the Grand Raffle of $3,000. "This is to help with the many ministries of St. Augustine, especially for youth," he said. "That is all we are able to do because we can't plan anything with any certainty. It has been a real problem getting fundraisers off the ground, so it is certainly very helpful to be able to still do something like this. We will manage in the end."
