Sky Flyer Zip Line opens in Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID | Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the grand opening of the new Sky Flyer Zipline at the Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumping Complex. Part of upgrades put in motion last year, the Sky Flyer is the newest year-round attraction at the Olympic Complex and, along with the recently completed Skyride Gondola, the venue now provides several ways to soar and explore the stunning beauty of the Adirondacks, Cuomo announced. The Sky Flyer Zipline opened for the first rides on July 17. It will be open weekly, Wednesday to Sunday, for summer operations through mid-October and then on weekends for the fall season. "The Sky Flyer Zipline is our latest and most exciting addition to the Lake Placid Olympic Jumping Complex, and is part of our ongoing effort to modernize the entire complex," Cuomo said. Renovations at ORDA are not just for the athletes that train and compete here in the wintertime, he said. "They are for the thousands of families in New York and across the northeast who come to Lake Placid for summer fun. Our efforts are transforming the complex into a year-round provider of excitement and entertainment, which will attract more summer visitors and provide a boost to local businesses." ORDA President and CEO Mike Pratt said the transformation of the Olympic Jumping Complex into a year-round destination is something they are very proud of. "Besides hosting international competition and training, our guests will now be able to feel the same exhilaration as our athletes." Soaring parallel to the Olympic landing hill at a 30-degree decline, the zip line is designed so riders experience the excitement of an Olympic ski jumper. Guests experience the ride from a seated position as they fly from the 70-foot tower located next to the take-off ramp. A 700-foot descent gracefully ends near the base lodge on the landing deck. Visitors can take the SkyRide Gondola up the hillside to the Olympic jump towers and step into a glass-enclosed elevator to the top of the 120-meter tower. Panoramic views from the observatory are among the most stunning in Lake Placid. And there is also a viewing deck outside that overlooks the entire landing hill. ORDA staff at the Olympic Ski Jumping Complex facility will operate these features during the COVID pandemic on reduced capacity and guests have to follow all New York State health protocols, requiring face coverings. The Sky Ride and gondola will run at limited occupancy on each trip. Tickets are available by reservation for $45 the first trip and $25 for an additional trip. Advance reservations and ticket purchase are strongly encouraged, as on busy days and in keeping with 50% capacity, this ride will sell out. There are other requirements to ride the zip line: all riders must be wearing closed-toe shoes, stand between 52″ and 80″ (inches) in height and weigh between 50 pounds to 260 pounds. All of these parameters will be checked upon arrival at the venue. The ride is not recommended for those who have recently had surgery, back issues, those who are pregnant or who have heart conditions. Riders will be asked these questions prior to riding the Sky Flyer Zipline. A signed waiver is required to ride.
