Village recreates outdoor recreation

CHAMPLAIN | While social distancing and the pandemic have impacted many summer activities and events throughout the North Country, residents in the Village of Champlain are finding a variety of safe ways to still enjoy the season. LONGBOAT CANCELLATION, OTHER OPTIONS The community's popular annual longboat rowing program through the Lake Champlain Basin Program was canceled, but the area's disc golf course and other resources have seen more use, said Village of Champlain Mayor Janet McFetridge. She also said multi-use trail activities like walking, running and cycling remain popular on the five-mile Northern Tier Rec Trail, traveling from Bill Earl Park in the Village of Champlain to the elementary school in the Village of Rouses Point. Other options for recreation include increased usage of the area's natural resources. "Although we had to cancel our longboat rowing program this summer, we have seen many people enjoying canoeing and kayaking on the Great Chazy," McFetridge told Sun Community News. YOUTH ACTIVITIES EVOLVE The village's formerly-closed playground is now open, though basketball and volleyball amenities are not permitted for use. Area families recently coordinated a mural painting at the playground, of a U.S. map. "They were able to work in their family units so staying apart was pretty easy," McFetridge said. Additionally, the "Amazing Champlain Challenge", an annual fun-run series in the area, is now being held virtually, with participants posting their times online. "We are making the best of a difficult situation."
