Clinton Correctional in lockdown following yard incident

DANNEMORA | Concern swirled in Dannemora over the weekend as Clinton Correctional Facility remained in lockdown following a volatile incident in the North Yard July 11 . Sources told Sun Community News that the incident unfolded at about 5 p.m. Saturday when an unknown number of inmates refused to leave the outdoor recreation area and adhere to commands. Armed officers stood watch from the wall towers for several hours as correctional officers below tried to deescalate the situation, which then reportedly involved altercations among inmates. Gas-agent weapons were used to help force control as extra officers flooded the area and additional staff was called in amid a growing crowd of concerned residents outside, who heard shots fired and could see what appeared to be smoke billowing from the rec yard. Within two hours, Cook Street was lined with officer vehicles as staff flooded the maximum-security facility to help quell the situation. The following morning, a handful of residents remained outside to cheer for officers as they came and went for shift change while the incident remained the talk of area residents. The facility was immediately placed on lockdown and a full search of the interior was continuing as authorities further investigated the incident, which reportedly stemmed from an inmate protest. The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision had not commented on the situation as of midday Monday. While details were limited, New York State Corrections Office Police Benevolent Association representatives said no staff injuries were reported.
