"Trans Rights are Human Rights" protest advocates for equality

PLATTSBURGH | In spite of rainy weather, a strong turnout represented transgender rights at Trinity Park in Plattsburgh on Sat., June 28. On the anniversary of the six-day-long 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City, LGBTQIA+ members and allies in Plattsburgh held a "Trans Rights are Human Rights", gathering downtown in solidarity to hear speeches from community members. June was Pride month, nationally, and the Stonewall riots were a turning point in the Gay Liberation Movement, evolving to include the entire LGBTQIA+ community, which stands for "lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual", according to the UC Davis LGBTQIA Resource Center. June is also the month during which the Pulse Nightclub shooting took place in 2016 in Orlando, Florida. Recently, some national Title IX legislation was adjusted on the anniversary of this tragedy which previously protected trans individuals from medical discrimination; in New York, the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) protects rights relating to education and employment. Event organizer Sage Wolf wrote in the Facebook event description, "The transgender community, specifically black transgender women, started the LGBT movement. They were the first ones to riot and demand human rights and yet the transgender community has not had a moment of peace. We've been banned from the military, refused medical treatment, are constantly under attack from the current administration, and are being murdered on an almost weekly basis. Please stand for us like we've stood for you."
