Fair Haven: New COVID-19 case(s) at a local business

FAIR HAVEN | Vermont health officials have voiced concern over new COVID cases appearing in Rutland County, as well as in Windham County. The official concern was expressed at two news conferences held in Montpelier on June 22 and June 24. The Fair Haven-based business, later identified as Camara Slate, had not been identified by the state in order to protect the privacy of employees (possibly immigrant workers whose legal status is not known). However, the state had no problem identifying other entities, such as a state correctional facility, over virus outbreaks in the recent past. A Fair Haven resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Eagle that he was worried about the state's "lopsided" policy in not identifying the local business with COVID cases due to political correctness. However, since the business is not a retail operation, the public would not have had contact with workers, at least according to state health officials. Another resident told The Eagle that the business in question was already known by Fair Haven residents to be what was being investigated by state health officials. "We know the virus is still here; it didn't magically disappear. It's still among us, which is why we must continue to place restrictions," Gov. Phil Scott (R) said at the news conference on June 22. "Let me be clear, we're going to see new cases. These outbreaks will continue to happen - that's the nature of the virus. We need to remain vigilant until there is a vaccine or other treatment available. I know we can do this, we've already proven just how strong we are." Officials said investigations of the two "small clusters" cases, in Rutland County and also in Windham County, are underway.
