Thomas C. Halliday, III, M.D.

CHATHAM, MASS. | Thomas C. Halliday, III, M.D., of Chatham, Mass., passed away peacefully on May 11, 2020, at Cape Cod Hospital from complications due to COVID-19. Dr. Halliday was born November 23, 1933, in Bronx, N.Y., to Margaret A. and Thomas C. Halliday, Jr. He graduated from Evander Childs High School at 16 years old in 1950 and was a 1954 graduate of Bates College, majoring in biology and running for the track team. He went on to New York Medical College, Class of 1958, and upon graduation began an internship at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y. In June 1958, he married Carol A. Halliday (nee Wywiorski), and upon completion of his internship in 1959 began practicing family medicine in Cicero, N.Y. In 1960 they moved to Chestertown, N.Y., where he opened a family medical practice. Shortly thereafter, they started a family, having three daughters: Jane Merritt (b. 1960), Susan Carol (b. 1962) and Beverly Jean (b. 1969). In 1974 he relocated to Chatham, Mass., married Brenda L. Halliday (nee Hills) and joined Chatham Medical Associates, where he practiced until 2013. He then practiced at Liberty Commons, Pleasant Bay Nursing Home and The Terraces Orleans until May 4, 2020, when he was diagnosed with COVID-19. After family and medicine, Dr. Halliday (aka Thomas, Dad, Poppa, Tommy) loved playing and watching sports with friends and family. In his early years he was a runner (boasting a 4:20 mile) and in the '60s raced outboard runabout racing boats under the colors of the Lake George Regatta Association, receiving his International Racing Drivers License in 1967. Later in life he picked up skiing, tennis, golf and squash. He was a member of Eastward Ho!, competing in many club tournaments, and Mid-Cape Racquet and Health Club. He had a passion for pleasure sailing—especially in the waters off Chatham and the Virgin Islands—which he passed on to his daughters. In his spare time, when not reading medical journals, World War II history or a great novel, he loved watching competitive sporting events and managed to be both a New England Patriots fan and a New York Giants fan. Yes, he proved it is possible. Serving his community was his calling. Whether as a caring physician, a library trustee, or attending Brewster Baptist Church, his love of community was felt by many. The lives he has touched will never be forgotten. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters and their spouses: Jane M. Halliday-Randall and John B. Randall of Old Saybrook, Conn., and Chestertown, N.Y.; Susan C. Halliday and Michael R. Cloutman of Chestertown, N.Y.; and Beverly J. Halliday and Nicholas C. Schmid of Carlisle, Mass.; a grandson, William M. Randall of Brunswick, Maine.; his sister, Hon. Nancy Ely-Raphel of Washington, D.C.; his nephews, John H. Ely of Washington, D.C.; and Robert D. Ely, and his wife, Mary Jean Bonadonna, of New York, N.Y.; and grandnieces Elizabeth H., Katherine G. and Thalia L. Ely. He is predeceased by his grandson John T. Randall, formerly of Old Saybrook, Conn. A celebration of his life will be announced at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
