Upcoming blood drives highlights need

PLATTSBURGH | The Adirondack Regional Blood Center will be hosting several blood drives this month to help replenish local blood supplies. To protect the safety of the donors and the donor team during a community drive, a number of safety measures have been put into place for each of the blood drives. Donors undergo a COVID -19 screening and phlebotomists are able to limit close contact while still providing exceptional care. Blood collected by the Adirondack Regional Blood Center stays in the North Country, helping hundreds of people in this region at hospitals in Plattsburgh, Elizabethtown, Malone, Massena, Saranac Lake and Glens Falls. Organizers say its success rests on the generosity of donors and sponsors. To be eligible to donate, a person must be in good health and at least 17 years old. The minimum weight requirement is 110 pounds. All donors must pass a physical and health history exam conducted at the drive prior to donation. A valid ID is required. Whole blood can be donated once every 56 days. The upcoming drives will be held Thursday, May 14 at the Lake Placid Masonic Lodge from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Monday, May 18, at Beekmantown Fire Department Station One, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Blood drives will also be held Tuesday, May 19 at Hudson Headwaters in Champlain, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesday, May 20, at Jay Fire Department, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. To learn more about the Adirondack Regional Blood Center, giving blood or becoming a sponsor, visit UVMHealth.org/GiveBlood or call 518-562-7406.
