Belanger part of Dan Stec's Assembly bid

The man who helped send then Willsboro Supervisor Teresa Sayward to Albany is now hoping he can do the same with Queensbury's Dan Stec. Win Belanger, who led the Sayward Assembly campaign in 2002, is stepping back into the world of campaigning as the Willsboro resident is now working with Stec, who also chairs the Warren County Board of Supervisors. The current fieldFour candidates have officially thrown their hat into the race for the 113th Assembly District in New York State following the announced retirement of Willsboro's Teresa Sayward, while several others are still contemplating runs. Here is a list of who is in as of press time: Doug Hoffman: The Republican accountant from Lake Placid announced he is seeking endorsements to run for Assembly, stating that he will commit to the race if he received the proper endorsements. Hoffman has also entertained the idea of again running for Congress. Bob Regan: The Republican and former Glens Falls Mayor has been an attorney with the state Legislature for seven years and has served as a deputy commissioner with Empire State Development. Dan Stec: Perhaps the first candidate officially in the race, the Republican Queensbury Supervisor is the current chairman of the Warren County Board of Supervisors. Stec said that he was interested in the position 10 years ago, but wanted to gain more experience which he now believes will be to his benefit. Evelyn Wood: The Republican Thurman supervisor is the most inexperienced member of the field, having served 15 months as the supervisor of Thurman. She cited two personal characteristics that would be put to use if she were elected to the post — working long hours in tackling tough issues and the ability to see both sides of an issue. "I have known Dan and his family for 10 years," Belanger said. "We met when I was Teresa's campaign manager and Dan ran against her in the endorsement process. He is the conservative Republican that has all the family values, knowledge of our local and state issue with the experience we need." Belanger said that when Sayward announced that she was stepping down from the assembly seat last month, he kept a watchful eye as candidates contemplated running for the post. "I worked hard for the Assemblywoman to insure we were represented from someone in Essex County when Senator Little filled Senator Stafford's post," Belanger said. "I was committed personally and professionally to do that again when she announced her retirement, until the field became vacant of Essex candidates." Belanger said that his choice became clear after Essex County Republicans Thomas Scozzafava of Moriah and Lorilee Sheehan of Willsboro decided not to run for the post. "It was very clear who would look after us up here in the North Country the way Teresa did," Belanger said. "I called and offered my services to Dan Stec and I endorse him as a an individual in hopes the Essex County Republican Committee will follow suit." Belanger has also worked with Doug Hoffman, who last week said that he would be seeking endorsements for the 113th seat while continuing to contemplate a run for Congress. "I have worked for Mr. Hoffman when he was a Congressional candidate and respect him and his message that he had for Congress, very much," Hoffman said. "I do however feel, with the current field, that Dan is a much better candidate to represent Essex County and its issues at state level." Stec recently received the endorsement of the Saratoga Republican Committee. The Essex County Committee meets March 21 to decide its official endorsements.
