Adirondack Loon, Trails Center to open

SARANAC LAKE — Biodiversity Research Institute's (BRI's) Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation and Leading E.D.G.E's Adirondack Community-based Trails and Lodging System (LE-ACTLS) announce the opening of the new Adirondack Loon and Trails Center Saturday, July 16. This unique environmental education center will be a valuable resource for visitors to learn about the iconic Common Loon and plans for a hut-to-hut trail system in the Park through interactive exhibits, photos, videos, and more. The Adirondack Loon and Trails Center will occupy a revitalized storefront in the historic Tousley Storage Building on Saranac Lake's Main Street. This distinctive structure was built in 1924, and is deeply rooted in the Village's history. It was originally used as a car garage and dealership. Later, it was converted into secure storage for furs, famous jewels, and valuable documents, and then used as the NYS Conservation Department's district offices until 1953. This exciting collaboration between two small, environmentally-minded Adirondack organizations will be a vital and interesting North Country destination for Adirondack residents and tourists alike. And with a gift shop featuring loon-related items by local Adirondack artisans, as well as items for one's next outdoor exploration, every visitor is sure to find the perfect memento of their time in the Adirondacks. Initially, both organizations will share one storefront, but future plans include expanding into the adjacent garage to provide additional space for exhibits and the gift shop. "After almost two decades of conducting our loon research and outreach projects from my house, I am very pleased to create this dynamic facility, which will greatly enhance our ability to share our research, knowledge of loon ecology, and love of loons with Adirondack residents and visitors throughout the year," said Dr. Nina Schoch, Coordinator of BRI's Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation. "Common Loons are a true icon of northern wilderness and especially of the Adirondacks, and Saranac Lake is the perfect place to share information about these magnificent birds with the Park's residents and visitors." "The Adirondack Loon and Trails Center will be the 'go-to' place in the Adirondacks for people to find out about a new form of Adirondack ecotourism to link the Park's communities together via a widespread network of trails and lodging opportunities," said Joe Dadey, the Associate Program Director for LE-ACTLS. "In addition, the Center will provide information on where to hike and paddle in the Park and how to safely recreate in an environmentally sound way." Opening Day of The Adirondack Loon and Trails Center will be held at 47 Main Street, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a ribbon cutting at 10:30 a.m. The Center is free and open to the public. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week until Labor Day.
