Paul Michael LoGuercio

Wevertown. Paul Michael LoGuercio was born in the Bronx, NY on March 24, 1943, the first born son of Enrico (Harry) LoGuercio, and Lucy (Ferrara) LoGuercio. He grew up in Mt. Vernon, NY, residing on the same street, St. Paul's Place, as four of his cousins. Many lifelong friendships were established during his childhood school days, and they endured throughout his life. Known as the "Roman Racer" in Westchester County because of his track and field prowess and his Italian heritage, he graduated A.B. Davis High School in 1961. His philosophy of life was evident even then when he had inscribed beneath his yearbook photo, "Get thy tools; God will find the work." He attended New York University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and his teaching certificate. While attending NYU, he ran track and participated in wrestling and gymnastics. He further pursued his education for his Master's degree in Colonial Studies, where he learned valuable skills that he passed on to so many others throughout his life. He returned to his hometown of Mt. Vernon to begin his teaching and coaching career, establishing a championship gymnastics team for Mt. Vernon High. The greater part of his teaching career was spent at the Quaker Ridge School in Scarsdale, NY where he also coached gymnastics for many years. He used his Colonial Studies skills to cook a very popular open fire Thanksgiving Feast every year at the Quaker Ridge School. During these working years, he also did construction work and remodeling on the side, specializing in copper roofing, gutters, and flashing. Paul was always productive and wanted to know how to do everything. After teaching for forty years, Paul retired to Wevertown, NY where he purchased his dream retirement retreat. He completely restored the existing structures, including the main house, cottage, and tool shed. From a new septic system to new roofs to new windows, he did it all. Over the years, he added numerous self-designed outbuildings including a tree house and woodsheds. More importantly, besides establishing his new home in the North Country, Paul endeavored and succeeded in becoming an integral part of the community, establishing a new circle of friends, offering his skills and talents to both young and old. He taught, mentored, donated his time and talents, created, listened, and identified with all those he met. His skills were only exceeded by his generosity and good nature. His legacy of kindness will be sustained in the community through the many lives he touched. Paul passed on September 1, 2014. He is survived by his life partner, Diane Anda; his daughter, Jessica Ryan; his grandsons, Buckley and Griffin Ryan; his brother Richard and his wife Kay; his nieces Kerry Grogan and Nicole Matonis; and many loving cousins. A memorial service will be held on September 13, 2014 at 1:00pm at Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek, NY. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made in Paul's memory to the following charities: Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) Foundation (www.leukemia.org) or the Dana-Farber Institute (www.dana-farber.org).
