Middlebury students present "Threshold" dance

Senior dance majors Stevie Durocher, Doug LeCours, Sarae Snyder, and Afi Yellow-Duke will present their thesis concert entitled "Threshold" on May 1- 2, at 8 p.m., in the Mahaney Center for the Arts. A year of research will culminate in this evening of diverse movement perspectives and multidisciplinary themes including anxiety, beauty, death, sadness, gender, and intimacy. Stevie Durocher '15 is a joint major in dance and English and American literatures whose work is informed by her research into portrayals of the idealized ballerina in children's literature. Durocher uses unconventional stage and lighting arrangements to juxtapose this idea with her personal relationship to both classical and contemporary movement vocabularies. Accompanying Durocher on stage are Krystal Egbuchulam '18, Olivia Raggio '15.5, Julia Rossen '16, and Esme Valette '16. Doug LeCours '15, in a joint project in dance and creative writing, is joined by Juliette Gobin '16, Emily Luan '15, Annie Powers '15, Sarae Snyder '15, and Meredith White '15 in a candid investigation of sadness, sexuality, and nostalgia. Incorporating text, video, and staccato movement, LeCours transports us to an imaginary past where agency and gender roles are examined and overturned. The choreographic work of Sarae Snyder '15 subverts traditional expectations of narrative structure, asking us to construct meaning from pure physicality. Snyder choreographs and performs with Maggie Ammons from Bennington College, and directs Miguel Castillo '17.5 and Meredith White '15 in a second, contrasting piece. She utilizes rhythm, spacing, unison, diversified movement quality, and dynamic shifts to deconstruct our expectations of the duet form. Afi Yellow-Duke '15, a joint major in sociology/anthropology and dance, investigates both personal relationships to anxiety and the systems of creating and responding to panic at a societal level. Her work uses sound, lighting, and historical and contemporary images of panic to critically engage our notions of fear. Rachel Getz '15.5, Andrew Pester '17, and Julia Rossen '16 will perform this foray into frenetic gestures, persistent repetition, and spatial isolation. Together, these four seniors deliver works that are both highly personal and relevant in a broader societal context. Their various approaches to movement and their distinct disciplinary backgrounds promise a provocative evening of new dances.
