Ti High students take advantage of Work Experience Program

Ticonderoga High School students have been taking advantage of internships and job experience opportunities throughout the community. The Ticonderoga High School Work Experience Program is run by Work Experience Program Coordinatior and teacher Kim Powers. "The Work Experience Program is divided into two components," said Powers. "There is a credit bearing program called the Career Exploration Internship Program and a Community Based Work Program which was implaced for students with disabilities to ensure job placement after high school." Powers normally requires students who enroll in the Career Exploration Internship Program to be a junior or senior, in good academic standing and exert a large amount of maturity. The experience not only gives students a view into a career or job but also helps students by building a resume. Several students have been able to use their job supervisors as references. "I did it to get firsthand experience at my desired profession so I could increase my knowledge of that profession and decide whether or not I wanted to continue it," ," said Ti High senior Dale Quesnel. Quesnel, a past participant in the program, was an intern at Moses Ludington Hospitals Emergency Service Room where he was able to obtain a summer job. Although stricter graduation requirments have limted the number of students who can participate in the program, the Work Experience Program is the perfect way for students to get hands on experience in the career and job field. The program allows for students to direct their lives so they know what they wanna do after high school. Being able to experience their desired job or career field allows for students to prepare themselves for real adult life. Some of the local businesses and organizations that students have done internships and job experience programs at include: Moses Ludington Hospital, Ticonderoga School District, Times of Ti, The Hot Biscuit Diner, St. Joseph's Treatment Center, ACAP Headstart, Fort Ticonderoga, Heritage Commons Nursing Home, McDonalds and the Town of Ticonderoga.
