Age of Steam celebrated at Slate Valley Museum

The Slate Valley Museum in Granville, N.Y., located across the Vermont stateline from the Poultney area, opened its newest exhibit "Iron Rail" this week. The traveling exhibit is part of the Court House Community Center series and includes historic photographs and archival footage tell the story of the railroads in New York and their links to Vermont. Over 20 historic images show the evolution of the railroad from steam engines to diesels as well as memorable moments and dangerous disasters in the history of the railroad. Visitors can also view a video documentary about the railroad and its importance to the community. The railroad made the slate industry in the Slate Valley possible. Trains connected many of the quarrying communities providing easy access from the slate quarries to markets in more urban centers. Before the arrival of the railroad, the slate market was limited to the New York-Vermont region. The program is made possible in part through the New York Council for the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the New York State Council for the Arts, the Shepard Broad Foundation Inc., Lakes to Locks, and the Miles Hodsdon Vernon Foundation Inc.
