The other 9/11: C-SPAN to telecast Battle of Lake Champlain

On the exact 200th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 1814 Battle of Plattsburgh, Art Cohn from the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum will present "The 1814 Battle for Lake Champlain and the Shipwreck Legacy," an illustrated lecture in the museum auditorium at Crown Point State Historic Site at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11. The topic is considered important and timely that C-SPAN has arranged for a video crew to record the 60-slide PowerPoint presentation. Before the battle, U.S. Navy Capt. Thomas MacDonough led the construction of the corvette Saratoga and a sloop Eagle and several gunboats at the shipyard in Otter Creek at Vergennes. Upon wresting control of Lake Champlain from the British, Macdonough's September 11 victory forced the British forces to retire to Canada, which left no grounds for any claims by the British peace negotiators for territorial gains. The American victory at the Battle of Lake Champlain ended the final invasion of the northern states of the United States during the War of 1812. Art Cohn was the co-founder and is now senior advisor/special projects developer at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. Cohn is a professional diver and has coordinated and participated in Lake Champlain's archaeological projects for many years. He has a B.A. degree in sociology from the University of Cincinnati and a J.D. degree from Boston College Law School. Cohn is an adjunct assistant professor in maritime history and nautical archaeology at both the University of Vermont and Texas A&M University. He holds honorary degrees from Middlebury College and the University of Vermont. Since the preserve's inception in 1985, Cohn has been the chief advocate for the Lake Champlain Underwater Historic Preserve. He has formally coordinated that program since 2000 for the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation. The author of "Lake Champlain Sailing Canal Boats: An Illustrated Journey from Lake Champlain to the Hudson River," Art also directed the Lois McClure Project, creating a full-sized replica of an 1862-class Lake Champlain canal schooner to travel the region's interconnected northern waterways as an ambassador to its history and shipwrecks. En route to Plattsburgh, the 88-feet-long replica canal schooner Lois McClure will be open to the public for free tours on Thursday, Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the dock located below the Champlain Memorial Lighthouse on the grounds of the Crown Point Reservation Campground. The historic site is located at the southwest (New York) end of the Lake Champlain Bridge. Admission to the evening program is free, but strictly limited to the first 65 guests. The doors will open at 6:45 p.m. and close promptly at 7 p.m., so that the presentation will not be interrupted.
