Hockey: Shaker/Colonie rallies past CBA at tourney

When Christian Brothers Academy ran out of gas, Shaker/Colonie pounced. The Jets scored twice late in the third period to tie the game and then won the shootout 2-1 to defeat the Brothers 5-4 in Friday's opening round of the Shaker/Colonie Thanksgiving Hockey Tournament at the Albany County Hockey Facility. "It's a great way to start our season," said Shaker/Colonie head coach Steve Hudak. CBA took a 4-2 lead on Dean McMahon's goal with 6:51 left in the third period, but Jake Juron and Joey Chiara tallied over the final 5:09 to help Shaker/Colonie pull even. "We changed the lines around in the third period, and I think that gave us a spark of energy," said Hudak. After a scoreless five-minute overtime period, the game came down to a shootout. Mike Mineau gave Shaker/Colonie a 1-0 lead when he scored on the Jets' first shot, but Evan VanEpps tallied for CBA to make the score even at 1. The shootout went to the fourth round, where Chiara scored the winner for Shaker/Colonie. CBA started quickly when Chris O'Keefe scored off a pass from John Basset 32 seconds into the first period. VanEpps made the score 2-0 later in the first period after taking a pass from McMahon and putting the puck past goaltender Kodi Riddell, but Mineau got that goal back by scoring off an assist by Chiara with 30 seconds left in the opening frame to trim CBA's lead to 2-1. Basset tallied early in the second period to put the Brothers ahead 3-1, and the score remained that way until Chiara scored less than three minutes into the third period to get the Jets closer again. Chiara finished the evening with two goals and an assist. Riddell and freshman goaltender Zach Dignum combined to stop 14 shots for Shaker/Colonie. Dignum was also in goal for the shootout, in which he stopped three of the four shots he faced. "It was great to see our freshman goalie come in and win it for us in the shootout," said Hudak. CBA netminder Dakota Smith was busy throughout the game, making 33 saves in regulation and overtime before Shaker/Colonie pulled out the victory in the shootout. "The CBA goalie was phenomenal," said Hudak. Shaker/Colonie meets Bethlehem in Saturday's tournament championship game, while CBA plays Mamaroneck in the consolation contest. Bethlehem held on for a 3-2 victory over Mamaroneck (Section I) in Friday's other opening round game at the ACHF.
