Movie shot in Schroon Lake

SCHROON LAKE – An independent feature film shot around Schroon Lake is getting its world premiere at The Strand Theatre. Part of the movie, "The Night We Met," was shot at the Adirondack General Store in the town of Horicon's Adirondack hamlet, on the east shore of Schroon Lake. The film will premiere at The Strand Theatre on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 13 and 14, with both shows at 8 p.m. The production was directed by Jon Russell Cring, with writing and cinematography by Tracy Nichole Cring, his wife. The Crings reside in the Albany area, but scouted filming locations in the North Country to settle on Schroon Lake. "The Night We Met" is a romance between two young people on their first date together. "It started with the idea of somebody who was friend of a friend calling up my (now) wife and saying 'you don't know her, but,'" Mr. Cring said in an interview. "They ended up dating for a few months. "We're very vulnerable in the way we can open up to somebody else." He said Schroon Lake turned out to be the ideal place for the 13-day shoot. "We had a connection through my producer, Stan Denis, and he had been up to the Adirondack General Store," Mr. Cring said. "I went up to look at that and everything started to fall into place. "They had a phone booth and we had a phone booth in the script. It started to mold itself around Schroon Lake." When Denis decided to help make the script of "The Night We Met" a reality, the Adirondack General Store one place he thought of as the perfect backdrop, Mr. Cring said. He went with Denis to scout Schroon Lake and met Maureen and Robert Diaz, owners of the Adirondack General Store. "The lake and mountains were picturesque, Maureen and Robert were so excited to be involved, and we walked out their front door and saw a phone booth," Mr. Cring said. "A phone booth was written into the script, and we thought it would be the hardest thing we'd have to find, but there it was," Denis said. The Adirondack General Store became the filmmakers' local base for the movie. "They (the Diaz's) became incredibly important to the process," Mr. Cring said. "They provided meals; they provided their home, a beautiful three-story place on the lake. We could not resist shooting at such a place." The Seagle Music Colony and The Stand Theater also make appearances in the film, along with many other local landmarks. The picture was shot in September 2014. As owners of the Adirondack General Store, they were excited to have an integral part in the making of the movie, Maureen Diaz said. "A few scenes were shot in front of and in the store as well as at our home," Mrs. Diaz said. "We also fed and housed the cast and crew during the making of the film." In celebration of The Strand Theatre's recent acquisition of digital film-projection equipment, the Adirondack Film Society, which was the nonprofit conduit for State Council on the Arts grant funding of the upgrade, is presenting the premiere along with the theater. The film stars Texas-based actor Sarah Joy Byington, who was cast, from the very first audition the filmmakers received via video submission, in the leading role of Stacey. New York City-based actor Lorenzo Rodriguez plays her love interest, Nick. Rodriquez's video audition was the last such submission the filmmakers received. Schroon Lake actor Haley Beauregard plays best friend Steph. The movie was shot in 4K high-definition video, Mrs. Cring said. "You get a really beautiful, crisp image out of it," she said. "We shot quite a bit at night." After the 90-minute picture has toured the film festival circuit around the country – it's next at the Atlantic City Film Festival – the Cring's will negotiate sales to Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, as they've done with some of their other 18 films. The Crings will be on hand at the premiere for a question-and-answer session after the film. All seats are $10, and tickets will be available in advance weekdays at the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce, every evening at the Strand, and at the door. It's really a romance movie, Mrs. Cring said. "I think everyone has had one of those magic nights where sparks fly, and if they haven't had one, they wish they had," she said.
