Fort Ticonderoga Assoc. receives $20K Preserve N.Y. Arts + Culture grant

TICONDEROGA | The Preservation League of NYS and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) have awarded a 2026 Preserve New York Arts + Culture: Support for Pre-Construction Studies Grant to The Fort Ticonderoga Association, which will fund a Historic Structure Report of the c. 1757 French Ovens. "The 1757 French Ovens are among the earliest surviving structures at Fort Ticonderoga, built by French soldiers during the Seven Years' War and still standing within the Northeast Bastion more than 260 years later," said Beth L. Hill, President and CEO of Fort Ticonderoga. "Responsible stewardship begins with understanding — the Historic Structure Report will give us the professional analysis needed to stabilize, restore, and care for these ovens for generations to come. We are grateful to the Preservation League of NYS and the New York State Council on the Arts for their partnership and for investing in the long-term preservation of this remarkable place." The c. 1757 French Ovens are located within the Northeast Bastion of the historic fortification at Fort Ticonderoga. A Historic Structure Report, to be completed by consultants from John G. Waite Associates, Architects, is a necessary foundation for future work in this area. Before the French Ovens can be safely stabilized and guidelines created for their restoration and management, they must be studied by professional preservation architects to analyze their architectural history, current condition, and environment. Analysis of comparable 18th-century baking spaces will also be beneficial in building a history of construction and reconstruction. This Report is the first step towards the stabilization and long-term preservation of the structure and is necessary for future fundraising efforts to support the implementation of the recommendations for repair. The report will inform future maintenance of the French Ovens once restored, ensuring the preservation of this vital historic resource. Fort Ticonderoga's 2024 Strategic Plan articulates a long-term vision for Fort Ticonderoga as a premier cultural destination in North America and national center for learning. Among the long-range goals of the Strategic Plan are to expand educational impact, strengthen collections and historic resources, and expand resources through organizational excellence. These goals shape all programs and activities including the preservation and care of the structures on the 2000-acre campus. "When it comes to sustainable and impactful preservation work, the importance of foundational building studies cannot be overstated," said Jay DiLorenzo, President of the Preservation League of NYS. "The League is honored to be able to continue providing this critical funding to bolster such a diversity of projects and communities. We are grateful for our longstanding partnership with NYSCA and support from the Hudson River Valley Greenway for making this work possible." "These pre-construction studies will help evaluate the needs of our state's cultural treasures for repairs and restoration, so they can continue to serve residents and visitors for generations to come," said Erika Mallin, Executive Director of NYSCA. "NYSCA is proud to partner with the Preservation League of NYS on this important program and help protect our rich cultural heritage. Congratulations to all of this year's grantees." Preserve New York Arts + Culture is a regrant program supported by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and administered by the Preservation League, made possible with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. Additional support is provided by the Maurice D. Hinchey Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area for the projects within the National Heritage Area boundary. At its 2026 meeting, an independent panel selected 13 applicants in 12 counties to receive support totaling $202,424.
