Late stop lifts Beekmantown over Springfield, 27-26

BEEKMANTOWN | Beekmantown survived a late Springfield (VT) push Friday night, stopping the Cosmos on their final possession to hold on for a 27-26 non-conference football victory. The Eagles (1-1) built a 27-20 lead through three quarters behind three rushing touchdowns from Carter LaPier and a 30-yard scoring pass from Keller Crucetti to Garrett Pelkey. Springfield cut the deficit to one when Maddox Wilson scored on a 6-yard run with 11:55 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the ensuing two-point pass failed. The Cosmos (1-1) got one final chance after taking over at their own 21-yard line with exactly 2:00 remaining. A holding penalty backed Springfield into a second-and-20, and the drive stalled before the Cosmos could pick up a first down. Springfield turned the ball over on downs on an incomplete pass, allowing Beekmantown to take possession at the Springfield 26 with 27 seconds left. Crucetti then took a knee to seal the win. LaPier powered the Beekmantown offense with 169 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries. He scored on runs of 11, 24 and 3 yards, all in the second quarter. Crucetti completed 6 of 10 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown. Pelkey was his primary target, catching four passes for 107 yards, including the 30-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Beekmantown finished with 197 rushing yards and 325 yards of total offense. Springfield was led by Josiah Martinez, who rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Wilson completed 7 of 18 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing score. The Cosmos opened the scoring on Martinez's 6-yard run in the first quarter before Beekmantown answered with three second-quarter touchdowns from LaPier. Springfield stayed within striking distance behind Martinez's 43-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and a 24-yard touchdown pass from Wilson in the third.
